At the recent presentation “Building Workflows into Drupal Web Forms,” Symphony3’s very own Philip Joseph, better known as PJ amongst his colleagues,  gave an insightful and engaging deep dive into how web forms can do a whole lot more than collect data.

Forget boring form submissions that disappear into the void—PJ showed how adding structured workflows can make your Drupal web forms part of powerful, guided processes that drive efficiency, accountability, and better user experiences.

This wasn’t a “how to make a contact form” session. PJ’s talk was aimed at folks who are already comfortable configuring Drupal and Web Forms—think advanced options like access controls, notifications, and automated emails. If that’s you, you were in the right place.

🗨️ This is not a Web Form 101 session… we're touching on more complex configuration.

PJ shared some takeaways from his hands-on experience:

- Keep workflows simple to avoid complexity spirals.
Plan your roles—complex workflows can mean many new roles.
- Be cautious changing workflows midstream—you risk breaking stuff.
- Training your non-tech users—train your admins and document well!

🗨️ We’ve had to create 30–40 roles just to support one complex workflow.
